In Beirut the state water reaches most homes only about every three days, so a household lives off what its tanks hold — the rooftop tank, and the ground tank under the building — and calls a truck to top up when that runs short. The tank and trucked water are brackish — fine for washing, cleaning and the toilet, but not for drinking. Keep the refill jugs for drinking and cooking, and use this planner for everything else.
The toilet is the biggest single draw
A full flush is 6–9 litres, several times a day per person. A half-flush, or a filled bottle set in the cistern, saves more water faster than anything else in the home.
Catch the state fill
When the mains water comes, make sure the pump fills the roof tank right up. A tank left half-full is days you'll end up paying a truck to replace.
